Tesla Launches a New Automotive Connector Standard

2024-11-04By EV Chargers691 Reads

Tesla has announced a new standardization aimed at reducing the cost and complexity of electronics in the automotive industry, and is inviting all equipment suppliers and automakers to join the initiative.

Today, electric vehicles typically use more than 200 connectors. To simplify this process, Tesla has simplified the connectors in its cars to use only 6 connectors.

Tesla: “To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy, we are simplifying the manufacturing process and electrical connection requirements for all vehicles. This includes the implementation of our Low Voltage Connector Standard (LVCS), which has enabled us to reduce the large number of connector types required to just 6. These 6 device connectors are designed to meet the power and signal requirements of more than 90% of typical electrical device applications. This standardization further improves operational efficiency, reduces costs, and enables manufacturing automation.

LVCS expands the same 48V electronic architecture used for Cybertruck. It meets the increased spacing requirements for 48V operation and is available in an industry-standard light blue color. The 48V architecture is the best long-term choice, delivering the same power at only ¼ the current. It is designed to enable reliable autonomous vehicles, with a rugged single-wire seal and independent secondary locking mechanism, while minimizing the package size.

Other older electric models such as Ford, Rivian, Polestar and other brands of electric vehicles can use the for chargingfind suitable charging facilities no matter where they are.
